Cambodia Driving Theory Test: Complete Guide for New Drivers
If you’re getting ready to apply for a driver’s license in Cambodia, you’ll need to pass a written theory test before you can take the practical exam. Here’s what to expect and how to prepare.
What format does the test take?
The theory test is a multiple-choice exam, typically made up of around 25 questions drawn from a larger question bank covering road signs, traffic rules, and license requirements. Most testing centers give you about 20 minutes to complete it.
What’s the pass mark?
A common pass mark is 80%, meaning you need to answer at least 20 out of 25 questions correctly. If you don’t pass, you can usually retake the test after a short waiting period - but it’s much easier (and cheaper, in terms of time) to be well prepared the first time.
What topics are covered?
The question bank generally covers five broad areas:
- Road Signs - recognizing prohibition, warning, and mandatory signs by shape and color.
- Traffic Rules - right of way, lane discipline, intersections, and general road conduct.
- Speed & Alcohol Limits - speed limits for different vehicle types and roads, and rules around driving under the influence.
- License & Documents - what documents you need to carry and license categories.
- Motorbike Rules - rules specific to motorbikes and scooters, which are extremely common in Cambodia.
How to prepare
The best way to prepare is repetition: work through practice questions in each category until you consistently score above the pass mark, then take full-length mock exams under timed conditions to simulate the real test.
Cambodia Test Drive offers free mock exams (25 questions, 20-minute timer, 80% pass mark) and category practice in both English and Khmer, with no account required. Start with category practice to build up your knowledge, then move on to a full mock exam once you’re scoring well.
A note on accuracy
This guide and the practice questions on this site are an unofficial study aid based on Cambodia’s Law on Road Traffic and publicly available MPWT information. Always confirm the current official format and content with the MPWT “Cambodia Driving Rules” app or a registered driving school, since exact formats can vary by testing center.
